Your first step after the accident

Five steps lead from your call to the payout. You only need to act in the first step.

1

Hire an independent vehicle expert

After an accident that was not your fault, you choose the expert yourself. Recommendations from a repair shop or an insurer are suggestions, not a requirement.

2

On-site inspection

The inspection usually takes place on the same day or the next day. On site, recording a typical damage takes 30 to 45 minutes.

3

Write the report

The report is usually ready one day after the inspection. If it takes longer, we tell you in advance.

4

Delivery and questions

We send the report to everyone involved. We remain your contact for technical questions.

5

Repair or payout

We explain the settlement options. You decide.

The other party's insurer pays directly After an accident that was not your fault, you do not pay in advance. The other party's liability insurance usually pays the costs.

Inspection depth

How far the inspection goes

Six steps define how far the inspection goes. The report then contains exactly what we find on the vehicle, and each item has a supporting document.

  • 1Cause of damageDo the damage pattern and the described accident match? The impact height, contact marks and direction of deformation must fit together. If they do not match, we document this.
  • 2Prior damageWhat is the difference between repaired prior damage (Vorschaden) and unrepaired old damage (Altschaden)? They are two different situations. If you do not separate them clearly from the current event, you give the insurer a reason to apply a reduction (Kürzung) later.
  • 3StructureDoes damage to an outer body part stay on that part? Not always. Sometimes it reaches the longitudinal member (Längsträger), a load-bearing beam in the vehicle floor. So we include the axles and the underbody in the check. If doubt remains after the visual check, the vehicle goes on the vehicle lift in our workshop in Erlangen-Frauenaurach. If the structure is in fact damaged, a specialist repair shop measures the vehicle exactly.
  • 4Paint layerWhat does the thickness of the paint layer tell us? Whether work was done before, and where. This decides if damage belongs to the current accident or to an earlier repair.
  • 5Driver assistance systemsWhere exactly are the radar, camera and sensors? Often exactly where the impact happens. So the real calibration effort must be part of the repair cost calculation, even if no photo shows it.
  • 6Repair cost calculationWhat does the calculation consist of? Of labor time units (Arbeitswerte), the time the manufacturer sets for each repair step, plus paint levels and parts prices. All of it comes from the manufacturer's system and is not guessed. A clear calculation makes a flat reduction harder to justify. Call us, and we tell you whether a report is worthwhile for you.

Car businesses are close together in the south

Between Schwabacher Straße and the Main-Donau-Kanal, several repair shops, car dealers and parts dealers stand side by side toward the southern city limit. This is our observation from daily practice, not an official statistic.

Short distances: repair shop, paint shop, parts dealer

Several businesses are close together in this area. Beyond the canal, in the industrial area of Südstadt, many car dealers follow. For the inspection, this means short distances. One appointment there can often be combined with a second one.

Fleets: vehicles registered to a business

Many vehicles in the district are registered to a business, so the time a vehicle is out of use matters. Often several vehicles of one fleet are damaged, for example vans from the same owner with the same body type but different histories. We then separate earlier damage from new damage for each vehicle.

64,724 motor vehicles: this many are registered in the whole city

According to the district data sheets of the Office for Urban Research and Statistics for Nuremberg and Fürth, 64,724 motor vehicles were most recently registered in Fürth. There is also a Siemens plant in the west of the city, in Hardhöhe.

Narrow lanes

Why different damage happens in the old town

Fürth suffered air raids in World War II, but about 90% of the historic buildings survived. For this reason, the medieval street layout along Maxbrücke, Königstraße, Marktplatz and Gustavstraße still has the form that grew over the centuries. The protected heritage ensemble of the old town alone includes more than 200 individual buildings on about 30 streets. Schindelgasse shows how narrow it is. Over many generations, people built more and more in the courtyards.

What follows from this for damage patterns is our observation from practice, not a statistic. In these lanes we mostly see maneuvering and contact damage: scrapes on wall corners and bollards, dented bumpers when pulling out of a courtyard, and scratches across several parts that must be assessed one by one. Where homes have no parking spaces of their own, people park close together, and close parking causes contact.

Unlike in Nuremberg, trams do not share the road here. The tram in Fürth was discontinued in 1981. The Fürth section of the U1 subway line runs underground or on its own track. There are no grooved rails (tram rails set into the road) in Fürth. How grooved rails damage a vehicle and what we check then is explained on our page about damage inspection in Nuremberg.

What the repair estimate does and what the report does

When is a repair estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) enough? For minor damage up to about €750 this is usually the case. Above that, a repair estimate misses items that are part of the damage.

Repair estimate

Enough for smaller damage
  • Parts pricesThe needed parts are listed with their costs
  • Labor time units and labor costsThe hourly labor rates (Stundenverrechnungssätze) of the repair shop are included
  • Repair costsAn estimate of the total repair amount is included
  • Photos often minimalSometimes they are missing completely, so the damage is not recorded as evidence
  • Diminished value is missingThe diminished value (merkantiler Minderwert) is not taken into account
  • Downtime is missingWithout it, you cannot calculate loss-of-use compensation
  • Residual value (Restwert) is missingIn a total loss (Totalschaden), you cannot complete the calculation

Vehicle report

Usual for damage of about €750 and more
  • Photo documentationThe damage pattern, contact marks and impact height are recorded
  • Diminished valueWe determine it and give it as a clear amount. The page explains the calculation method. Diminished value
  • Basis for fictitious settlementWith it, the calculated amount can be paid out even without a repair. When this is possible is shown on the page Fictitious settlement
  • DowntimeBasis for loss-of-use compensation or a rental car
  • Replacement value and residual valueBoth are needed as soon as a Total loss seems likely
  • Optional equipment and modificationsFactory extras as well as later modifications affect the value
  • Separating new damage from earlier damageSeparates repaired prior damage clearly from unrepaired old damage and notes this in the HIS entry (HIS-Eintrag), the information and notification system of the insurers, which stores claims as database entries
  • Towing, vehicle recovery, transfer costs (Verbringung)These costs also belong to the damage and are included. Transfer costs are the costs of taking the car to the paint shop and back
  • Flat-rate expense allowance (Unkostenpauschale)For phone calls, trips and waiting time, usually €25 to €30 apply
Frequently asked questions

Common questions from Fürth

Costs

Who pays for the damage report?

For accidents that were not your fault, we bill the other party's insurer directly. You do not receive an invoice from us. For a claim under your own vehicle insurance (paid by your own comprehensive or collision coverage) or for damage you caused yourself, we tell you the price in advance.

When is a report worth more than a repair estimate?

Below about €750, it is usually minor damage. A repair estimate is usually enough for that. Between €750 and €1,500, it depends on the individual case. Above that, a report is the normal case. If you suspect hidden damage, a total loss or prior damage, a report is worthwhile whatever the amount of damage.

Process

How fast is the finished report ready?

On site, recording a typical damage takes 30 to 45 minutes. We usually arrange the inspection appointment for the same day or the next day. The finished report is usually ready one day after the inspection. In more complex cases it takes a little longer.

What else do you do for me after the inspection?

After the inspection, we write the report and send it to everyone involved. The insurer handles the claim settlement. Legal representation is the job of a lawyer. As your technical contact, we answer questions about the report.

Do I have to bring the vehicle to you?

No. We visit your vehicle where it is: in Südstadt, in the city center, in Hardhöhe or also in Ronhof, Burgfarrnbach and Stadeln. We only ask you to drive to our workshop in Erlangen-Frauenaurach if we suspect hidden damage to the underbody. We agree this with you in advance.

How long does it take until the insurer pays?

Review and payout usually take four to six weeks. If the settlement is clearly delayed or the insurer reduces the payment, a lawyer is the right contact for that. For questions about the technical side of the report, we are happy to help by phone.

Your rights

Do I have to use the expert that the insurer suggests?

No. After an accident that was not your fault, you choose the expert yourself. Repair shops and the other party's insurer often suggest someone. These are suggestions, not requirements.

What if my car was damaged before?

Tell us about prior damage, even if it was a long time ago. There is an important difference between repaired prior damage and unrepaired old damage. In the report, we separate both clearly from the current event. If you skip this separation, you create the reason for a possible reduction yourself.

Report

Can I have my vehicle repaired before the report?

Better not, because the extent of damage that was already repaired can no longer be proven. So contact us before the repair starts.

Am I entitled to diminished value as well?

For a newer vehicle with noticeable damage, this is usually the case. It means the amount your vehicle loses only because it counts as a car that had an accident, even after a professional repair. We show this amount separately in the report. Otherwise it does not appear in the settlement.

Which documents do you need from me?

Bring the vehicle registration certificate and your contact details. If you know the case number from the insurer or the police, tell us. We clarify the rest together on site.
