Your next steps after the accident

Five steps from the call to the settlement. You only need to do the first one yourself.

1

Hire an independent vehicle expert

For accidents that were not your fault, you choose the expert yourself. Suggestions from the repair shop or the insurer are only suggestions, not requirements.

2

On-site inspection

We can usually give you an appointment on the same day, because our office and workshop are in Erlangen. For typical damage, the inspection takes 30 to 45 minutes.

3

Write the report

Usually on the day after the inspection. If it takes longer, we tell you in advance.

4

Delivery and questions

We send the report to everyone involved. We remain your contact person for technical questions.

5

Repair or payout

We explain the technical settlement options. You make the decision.

Free of charge for you: for accidents that were not your fault, the other party's insurer pays You do not pay anything in advance. The other party's liability insurance usually pays the costs of the report. For claims under your own vehicle insurance (Kaskoschaden), for damage you caused yourself and for valuation reports (Wertgutachten), we tell you the price in advance and bill you directly.

Describe your case in five sentences or send three photos of the damage. I will tell you whether a report is worthwhile and what we need.

We come to you: throughout Erlangen and to Herzogenaurach, Baiersdorf, Bubenreuth, Möhrendorf, Uttenreuth, Spardorf and Höchstadt an der Aisch. Available by phone 24/7. Appointments are flexible by arrangement.

When the vehicle comes to us

Since August 2026, we have our own workshop in Erlangen-Frauenaurach with 235 square meters. This is the difference between seeing the damage and only guessing it.

Vehicle lift: uncovering hidden damage

From above, you see only half of the damage. The vehicle goes on our lift if the impact came from below, if we suspect that the vehicle frame is bent, or if prior damage (Vorschäden) is disputed. Nobody has to guess later what we document there.

Photo studio: for Oldtimers (classic cars, 30+ years), sports cars and motorcycles

For a valuation report, we do not only state the value of the vehicle. We also show the vehicle. That is why we take photos in the studio, not in the yard.

Our workshop: Willi-Grasser-Straße 21

91056 Erlangen-Frauenaurach. Please make an appointment with us first. The standard is still the inspection where the vehicle is, and the workshop costs nothing extra.

Inspection depth: what we record on your vehicle

Six steps decide how far the inspection goes. We list what the damage actually shows, point by point and easy to follow.

  • 1Cause of damage and plausibilityDoes the damage pattern fit the described accident? Impact height, contact marks and direction of deformation must match. Where they do not, we write it down instead of ignoring it.
  • 2Separating prior damage (Vorschaden) and old damage (Altschaden)Repaired prior damage and unrepaired old damage (Altschaden) are two different things. If they are not clearly separated from the current event, this gives the insurer a reason for a reduction (Kürzung) right away.
  • 3Structure and axle geometryDamage that looks like simple body damage from the outside can sometimes reach the longitudinal member. This is the load-bearing beam along the vehicle floor. It can also reach the axle mount, where the suspension is bolted on. On the lift in Frauenaurach, we can see whether the suspicion is correct. If it is, the exact measurement follows in a specialist repair shop.
  • 4Paint thickness measurementThe thickness of the paint layer shows where work was done before. This decides whether damage belongs to the current event or to an earlier repair.
  • 5Driver assistance systems and calibrationRadar, camera and sensors sit exactly in the impact zone. The calibration effort that actually applies belongs in the repair cost calculation, even if no photo shows it.
  • 6Repair cost calculation based on manufacturer specificationsLabor time units (Arbeitswerte) are the time the manufacturer sets for each repair step. These times, the paint levels and the parts prices come from the manufacturer's system, not from guesses. A clear calculation removes the basis for a flat reduction. Call us, and we tell you whether a report makes sense in your case.

Typical for Erlangen: why different damage happens here than in Nuremberg

In Erlangen, a remarkably large share of traffic accidents involves a bicycle. This shapes the damage patterns we see here.

Of 2,886 traffic accidents in 2024, 304 involved cyclists. That is a little more than one tenth. When a car hits a bicycle, the contact areas are narrow. There are paint scuffs and traces of rubber and plastic, often at heights that two cars never reach. The scope of the repair calculation depends on whether a dent comes from the handlebar or was already there. Important: Do not wash the vehicle before we have inspected it. Call us first.

Erlangen has no streetcar. So one cause of damage is missing that is common in Nuremberg: the grooved rail in the road. When a car crosses it, the car can be pulled to the side and the rim can be damaged. Then it is often unclear on which trip this happened. To see how such damage looks in Nuremberg and what we record there, read the page for the independent vehicle expert in Nuremberg.

304 bicycle accidents in 2024 A little more than one in ten traffic accidents in Erlangen involves a bicycle, out of 2,886 accidents in total that year.

The difference between a repair estimate and a report

For small, clear damage, a repair estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) is usually enough. Courts see the exact limit differently, mostly somewhere between €700 and €1,000. In the end, it matters less how high the amount is. It matters more whether the damage is clearly simple.

Repair estimate

Fits small damage
  • Parts pricesList of the parts needed, with costs
  • Labor time units and labor costsHourly labor rates (Stundenverrechnungssätze) of the repair shop
  • Repair costsEstimate of the total repair amount
  • Often only a few photosSometimes they are missing completely, so the damage is not recorded as evidence
  • No diminished valueThe diminished value (merkantiler Minderwert) is left out
  • No downtimeWithout it, loss-of-use compensation cannot be calculated
  • No residual value (Restwert)In a total loss, half of the calculation is missing

Vehicle report

From about €750 in damage
  • Photo documentation with damage pattern, contact marks and impact heightDamage pattern, contact marks and impact height are recorded
  • Diminished valueDetermined and given as a clear amount. The page explains the methods. Diminished value
  • Basis for fictitious settlement (fiktive Abrechnung)This means you have the calculated amount paid out and do not repair the car. What to consider is explained under fictitious settlement
  • DowntimeBasis for loss-of-use compensation or a rental car
  • Replacement value and residual valueBoth are needed as soon as a Total loss is possible
  • Optional equipment and modificationsExtra equipment and later upgrades are included in the value
  • Separating new damage from earlier damageSeparates repaired prior damage from unrepaired old damage, see HIS entry(HIS-Eintrag). HIS is the information system of the insurers, a database in which insurers record damage cases
  • Vehicle recovery, towing, transfer costs (Verbringungskosten)These costs also belong to the damage and are recorded too
  • Flat-rate expense allowance (Unkostenpauschale)For phone calls, trips and waiting time. Usually €25 to €30

Valuation report and accident valuation in Erlangen

A valuation report records what your vehicle is worth on the market. You may need it before you buy or sell a car. It also helps you choose the right insured amount for a classic car. The vehicle value check takes place in our workshop in Erlangen-Frauenaurach or at your location.

After an accident, the accident valuation includes more than the repair costs. We also determine the diminished value and, in a total loss, the replacement value and the residual value. You can read about reasons and process on the page Valuation reports and classic car valuation reports.

Frequently asked questions: what customers in Erlangen want to know first

Costs

What does a damage report cost?

For accidents that were not your fault, the other driver's liability insurance usually pays the costs of the report. For claims under your own vehicle insurance, we tell you the price in advance. This means damage covered by your own comprehensive coverage (Teilkasko) or collision and comprehensive coverage (Vollkasko). We also tell you the price in advance for damage you caused yourself.

From what amount of damage is a report worth it compared with a repair estimate?

Below about €750, it is called minor damage (Bagatellschaden). A repair estimate is usually enough there. Between €750 and €1,500, it depends on the case. Above that, a report is the normal choice. If you suspect hidden damage, a total loss or prior damage, a report is worth it whatever the amount.

Process

How long does a damage report take?

In Erlangen, we usually give the appointment for the same or the next working day. For typical damage, the inspection takes 30 to 45 minutes. The finished report is usually ready the day after the inspection, a little later for extensive damage.

Do you come to the vehicle, or do I have to bring it to you?

We come to your vehicle. This can be in the city center, in Bruck, in the Röthelheimpark or in Tennenlohe. It can be at home, at work, at the repair shop or at the towing service. We use the lift in our workshop in Frauenaurach only if we suspect hidden damage on the underbody. We agree on this with you in advance.

When do I get the money from the insurer?

Four to six weeks are normal for review and payment. If the claim settlement (Regulierung) takes much longer, or if the insurer reduces the payment, this is a question for your lawyer. For the technical side of the report, we are available by phone to answer your questions.

Your rights

Can I choose my own expert?

Yes, for accidents that were not your fault. Repair shops and the other party's insurer often suggest someone. These are suggestions, not requirements. For a claim under your own vehicle insurance, your own insurer hires the expert instead.

The insurer wants to send its own expert. Must I allow this?

For accidents that were not your fault, you hire the expert yourself. If the other party's insurer announces a follow-up inspection, we first check the technical side of it. If you want, we can come to the inspection too. For claims under your own vehicle insurance, the situation is different. There, your own insurer hires the expert.

Report

May I have the car repaired before the report?

Better not. Once the damage is repaired, its extent can no longer be proven. Call us before the repair starts.

What happens if my car already had prior damage?

Tell us about it, even if it was a long time ago. Repaired prior damage and unrepaired old damage are two different things. In the report, we clearly separate both from the current event. Without this separation, you give the insurer a reason to reduce the payment.

What is loss-of-use compensation, and is it often overlooked?

Loss-of-use compensation is payment for the days when you could not use your vehicle. You may be entitled to it even if you did not take a rental car. We state the downtime and the vehicle class in the report, so that this item is not overlooked.

What do you need from me?

Have your vehicle registration certificate (Fahrzeugschein) and your contact details ready. If you already have a case number from the insurer or the police, tell us. We clarify everything else on site.

Had an accident in Erlangen? Call us.

You reach the expert directly, no call center. In the first call, we tell you without obligation and free of charge how to proceed best.
