What happens after the accident

Until the finished report (Gutachten) is ready, the case goes through five steps. Only the first step is your choice.

1

Hire an independent vehicle expert

For accidents that were not your fault, you choose the expert. If the repair shop or the other party's insurer names someone, that is only a suggestion, not a requirement.

2

On-site inspection

For the appointment, we usually keep the same day free. This way we can promise you the appointment and keep it. For a typical case, the inspection on site takes 30 to 45 minutes.

3

Write the report

The finished report is usually ready the day after the inspection. If the work needs more time, we tell you in advance.

4

Delivery and questions

The finished report goes to everyone involved at the same time. We stay your contact for technical questions.

5

Repair or payout

We explain the settlement options listed in the report. You decide which option to take.

The other party's insurer pays directly For accidents that were not your fault, you do not pay for the report in advance. Its costs are usually paid by the other party's liability insurance.

Inspection depth

Six steps define the scope of the inspection.

Between finding the damage and repairing it, we keep a firm line: whoever inspects the damage does not repair it. This separation keeps the report free of any interest in the repair order. Six steps set how far our review goes in Bamberg. If a step does not apply to a particular damage, it does not appear in the report either.

  • 1Cause and plausibility of the damageThe report compares the damage pattern with the description of how the accident happened. Impact height, contact marks and direction of deformation must match. If something does not match, the document notes exactly that point instead of skipping it.
  • 2Separating prior damage from old damageIn the report, repaired prior damage (Vorschaden) and unrepaired old damage (Altschaden) are two separate points. If the separation from the current event is missing, the report itself gives a reason for a later reduction (Kürzung).
  • 3Underbody, axles and structureSometimes more hides behind what looks like simple body damage. Then the longitudinal member is affected. These are the load-bearing long beams of the vehicle floor. The vehicle lift in our workshop in Erlangen-Frauenaurach clarifies what the visual check leaves open. The following measurement at a specialist repair shop confirms the suspicion or rules it out.
  • 4Paint thickness measurementThe paint thickness reading notes where work was done before. It then decides whether damage belongs to the current event or to an earlier repair.
  • 5Calibration of driver assistance systemsRadar, camera and sensors sit exactly where the crash hits the car. The real effort to calibrate them goes into the repair cost calculation, even if no photo shows it.
  • 6Calculation based on manufacturer specificationsLabor time units (Arbeitswerte) are the time the manufacturer sets for each repair step. Then come paint levels and parts prices. We take all three from the manufacturer system, never from a rough guess. A calculation backed up this way leaves no basis for a flat reduction. Describe your case to us by phone, and we tell you whether a report is needed.

Accident in Bamberg? We come to where your car is.

In the Inselstadt, every access road is narrow. In the harbor area, many trucks and trailers drive there. We come to both, whether the vehicle is at the repair shop, at a towing service or still at the accident scene.

World Heritage old town

Which access rules apply in the Bamberg old town

The old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The city has its own bylaw (Satzung) for the pedestrian zone. It covers Hauptwachstraße, Maxplatz, Grüner Markt, Obere Brücke, Karolinenstraße and Obstmarkt. Vehicles may enter there on weekdays before 10:30 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m., and only for deliveries and pickups. On Saturdays between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m., a separate window applies. It is only for removing the market stalls after the market. Vehicles must drive at walking speed. The maximum permitted total weight is 7.5 metric tons. Turning around is prohibited. A truck may reverse only with a guide. Keep a distance of two meters from the building fronts. The legal basis is the pedestrian zone bylaw of the city of Bamberg of December 4, 2001, last amended on October 30, 2019. Our check is current as of August 30, 2026. The version currently in force and the signs on site apply.

These rules lead to a recurring damage pattern. We see scrape damage along the whole side of the vehicle when drivers maneuver in narrow lanes. We see impact damage on bumpers and wheel arches, because building bases, guard stones and bollards stick out further into the road than they look from the driver's seat. And we see collisions when reversing, if the guide is missing or stands in the blind spot. This damage looks unspectacular and often costs more than expected, because sensors, paint layers and structural parts lie underneath.

If your vehicle is in the Bamberg old town, we inspect it on weekdays before 10:30 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. If it is somewhere else, for example at the repair shop, we come to that place.

Comparison

Repair estimate and report compared

For damage up to about €750, a repair estimate (Kostenvoranschlag) usually covers the case. Above that, it leaves out items that are part of the full damage.

The repair estimate

Suitable for minor damage
  • Parts pricesList of the needed parts with their costs
  • Labor time units and labor costsThe hourly rates that the repair shop charges
  • Repair costsEstimated total for the repair
  • Hardly any photosSometimes they are missing completely, and so the damage is not recorded as evidence
  • Diminished value missingThe diminished value (merkantile Wertminderung) does not appear in it
  • Downtime missingWithout this figure, the loss-of-use compensation (Nutzungsausfall) cannot be calculated
  • Residual value (Restwert) missingIn a total loss (Totalschaden), a central part of the calculation is then missing

The report

Starts at about €750 of damage
  • Photo documentation of damage pattern, contact marks and impact heightRecords damage pattern, contact marks and impact height
  • Diminished valueIt is determined and given as a clear amount. The page explains the methods. Diminished value
  • Basis for fictitious settlement (fiktive Abrechnung)This means having the calculated amount paid out without repairing. When this is possible is explained on the page fictitious settlement
  • DowntimeBasis for loss-of-use compensation or a rental car
  • Replacement value and residual valueBoth are needed as soon as a Total loss is in question
  • Modifications and optional equipmentRetrofits and extras affect the value
  • Separating prior damage from old damageSeparates repaired prior damage from unrepaired old damage. The page also explains the HIS entry (HIS-Eintrag) of the insurers. HIS is the insurers' notice and information system. It is a database in which insurers record claims
  • Vehicle recovery, towing, transfer costs (Verbringungskosten)These costs also count as part of the damage and are recorded
  • Flat-rate expense allowance (Unkostenpauschale)Covers phone calls, trips and waiting time. Usually €25 to €30
Frequently asked questions

What customers from Bamberg ask most often in advance

Costs

What costs arise for a damage report?

For accidents that were not your fault, the other party's liability insurance usually pays the costs of the report. Sometimes the claim goes through your own comprehensive coverage (Teilkasko) or collision and comprehensive coverage (Vollkasko). Sometimes you caused the accident yourself. In all these cases, we tell you the price in advance.

When is a report better than a repair estimate?

Damage under about €750 counts as minor damage (Bagatellschaden). A repair estimate is usually enough for it. For an amount of damage between €750 and €1,500, it depends on the case. Above that, the report is the normal choice. If you suspect hidden damage, a total loss or prior damage, a report is worth it regardless of the amount.

Process

Are Hallstadt, Hirschaid and the surrounding area also your area?

Yes, we cover the whole Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. Bamberg and the Bamberg district are firmly part of it.

Can you also reach the World Heritage old town?

Yes, with one limit: on weekdays we can reach the old town only before 10:30 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m. If your vehicle is in the Inselstadt or the Bergstadt, we schedule the inspection for the early morning or the evening.

How much notice does an inspection appointment need?

In Bamberg, we usually set the appointment for the same day. For a typical case, the inspection on site takes 30 to 45 minutes. The finished report is usually ready the next day.

How long until the insurer's money arrives?

Four to six weeks for review and payment are usual. If the claim settlement (Regulierung) takes much longer, or the insurer reduces the payment, that is a matter for your lawyer. We are happy to answer questions about the technical side of the report by phone.

Your rights

Do I have to use the expert that the insurer suggests?

For accidents that were not your fault, you decide who writes the report. The repair shop and the other party's insurer often name an expert, but that stays a suggestion, not a requirement.

How do you handle existing prior damage?

Tell us about it, even if it happened long ago. Repaired prior damage and unrepaired old damage are two different matters. In the report, we place both clearly in relation to the current event. If this separation is missing, that can give the insurer a reason for a reduction.

Report

Can the repair start before the report?

Warning: Start the repair only after the inspection. The extent of damage that has already been repaired can no longer be proven. Contact us before the repair starts.

Do you also document scrape damage from the narrow lanes?

Yes, in Bamberg this is even the most common case. We document scrape damage along the whole side of the vehicle, contact marks on bollards and bases, and damage at the wheel arch. We treat it like rear-end collision damage. For long scrape damage, the insurer accepts all affected parts only if the documentation is clear and complete.

Which documents should you have ready?

Have these ready: the vehicle registration certificate (Fahrzeugschein), your contact details and a file number from the insurer or the police, if you already have one. We discuss everything else on site.
